Chickens in the City
9/6/2006 7:45 AM

Last spring I launched Community Education class on keeping a backyard flock of poultry. It was a HUGE success, many of my students are enjoying their chickens now! If you have ever been interested in keeping your own chickens for eggs, beauty, bug & weed control, or just to enjoy their wonderful nature; I highly encourage you to enroll in this course! I won’t be the instructor for the Fall session, but I will co-instruct the Winter and Spring classes. My good friend and permaculture diva, Rebecca, who was the other instructer for the last session, will be instructing this session. I know it will be a hit!!!

The course is on Wednesday, October 25th  from 6-9pm at Southwest High School (off France Ave S, bus # 6) in Minneapolis, MN.

It costs only $21!!!

I love my chickens, ducks, and geese not only because they are a big group of dynamic personalities, but because they do so much for my garden! I haven’t seen a slug or grasshopper since they have arrived. They relish just about every common garden weed. I have had AMAZING vegetables and herbs because of their nitrogen rich manure, the basil was especially awesome! Not to mention a cascade of fresh eggs everyday.  It is great for kids too! Not only are poultry safe, economical, and affectionate pets for kids, but they get eggs as a reward for taking good care of their pets. There will be several live birds there to hold and pet, in addition to practical skills to learn hands on.

Look out for the new issue of Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine, They wrote an article about my urban flock!
