Organic agriculture began leaping into the mainstream in 2000, with establishment of the National Organic Program as part of the USDA. The program set national standards for organic production and processing, accreditation of organic certifiers, and established a USDA Organic label that made certified organic foods easily identifiable to consumers.
Organic agriculture acreage increased by 15% each year between 2002 and 2008. Despite a distressed economy starting in 2008, which temporarily reduced demand for organic milk; Organic food as a whole continued to be one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the food industry.
