Sustainable farming practices are incredibly diverse. Farm families in Minnesota are practicing all kinds of ways to achieve the balance of economic, environmental and quality of life benefits that marks a sustainable system.
Some basic skills and practices are important for all farmers trying to improve their sustainability. Goal-setting and business planning; choosing a mix of crops and livestock that works for your farm and your lifestyle; good soil management; and smart marketing are all part of the foundation of a sustainable farm. Specialized production such as organic agriculture, or community involvement through a farm-to-school program, can be part of a strategy for sustainability, too.
This section is not intended to be a comprehensive resource on all of these topics. Rather, what we have tried to do here is to choose the resources in each category that are most likely to be very useful to Minnesota farmers.
