Graduate Fellowships in Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State U.
4/17/2008 9:45 AM

The Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture (GPSA) at Iowa State University has obtained a grant through the USDA Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate and Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants Program to provide two fellowships to students pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy degree in sustainable agriculture.

The fellowships are available to students entering the GPSA in Fall 2008 (August). In order to be eligible, applicants must be US citizens or Nationals; priority consideration will be given to members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the food and agricultural sciences. Applicants must submit a complete graduate application per the instructions provided at http://www.sust.ag.iastate.edu/gpsa/application.html, including a statement of purpose requesting consideration for a fellowship award. Applications are still being accepted for both awards for the fall term.

Awardees will receive an annual stipend of $24,000 for a three-year period and an annual
allowance of $1500 to apply towards educational expenses. Full tuition and benefits are
included.

In addition to the broad curriculum and research opportunities provided by the GPSA, the
program of study for each Fellow will include an interdisciplinary teaching appointment, a
professional practice assignment (public outreach or extension), and an international training experience (potentially combining research, teaching & outreach). Fellows will be supervised by their faculty advisors and a network of mentors provided by the GPSA faculty and staff and are expected to participate in professional conferences and on-campus colloquia and seminars.

As the first graduate-degree-granting sustainable agriculture program in the nation, the GPSA offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment for students who wish to pursue research at the leading edge of sustainability studies. Featuring a dedicated faculty of more than 60 members from 16 participating departments, students have the opportunity to work with top researchers in the biophysical and social sciences and to apply that work to building a sustainable future.
