Homestead and Landscape Design Course

Located in the East Metro but open to anyone, this is a repeat of our sold-out May course.

Learn basic landscape design language and technique, using the design process on your own property! You will design your own landscape with professional guidance, using professional drafting tables and facilities in class, including 24x36 - 8 scale paper and a large-format copier and printer.

When: four Thursday evenings - Oct 29 and Nov 5,12,19 - from 6:30-9:30pm
Where: Room 435 in the main building of Brown College, 1405 Northland Drive (North of I494 and Pilot Knob Road), Mendota Heights, MN 55120
Cost: PRI Cold Climate members $130, nonmembers $160, Pair sharing a table $220.

Session 1: Site Assessment and Base Mapping
Overview- Paper Language, Bubble Maps, Concept, Draft, Final Draft, Final Design
Assignment - Homestead base mapping measurements.
Demonstration: Site Assessment and Base Mapping

Session 2: Design Progression - Hardscapes, Uses, Access, Plant Patches
Classroom Pencil Practice: Tools, Landscape Symbols, Drawing a Base Map, and using Bum Wad.
Assignment - Finish base map and start bubble maps.
Demonstration: Access and Water Works

Session 3: Draft Design Workshop
Style Demo, Practice and Supervised Work Session. Transfer of Bum Wad concepts to Draft Design. Plant Size and Placement.
Assignment - Complete draft design.
Demonstration: Hardscapes: Retaining Walls, Terracing, Rock, Decks and Pavers

Session 4: Final Design Process and Supervised Work Session
Plant Selection, Ground Covers, Material Calculations, Implementation Notes and Logistics
Assignment - Finish Final Design and scan to Tiff or Jpeg and e-mail to Instructor for critique.
Demonstration: Plant Database Queries and Internet Resources
