Marketing

Many farmers who use sustainable practices find that they need to pay special attention to marketing of their products.  Their profitability is improved if they find specialty markets, or "niche" markets, for their products instead of selling through regular commodity channels.

The marketing work can be very challenging for people who find more enjoyment in growing a crop than in trying to sell it.  Luckily, there are resources available to help.

Some of the words that describe specialized kinds of marketing:

Direct Marketing -- Usually this means the farmer is selling products directly to members of the public.  Also, this term can mean that the farmer is selling products directly to a retail store, restaurant, etc.

Identity Preserved -- This term is usually used for grain; it means tracking and documenting special production methods or crop varieties, and selling the grain on that basis.

Value-Added -- Processing or packaging of raw agricultural products adds value to those products.   A ground, mixed, and bagged animal feed is a value-added product.  So is jam or jelly made with farm-grown fruit.
