Meat Sales
Sustainable farming practices often involve livestock.  Some consumers are seeking out meat from animals that are raised in a certain way -- without antibiotics, perhaps, or on pasture.  Farmers in Minnesota have opportunities to sell their animals to businesses that market an alternative meat product.  Also, some farmers have found that it is profitable to sell the meat from their animals directly to the public.

The rules for direct marketing meat can be confusing.  This section contains fact sheets with the information that you need to navigate the world of direct meat sales.

The best source of additional information on meat sale regulations is the Dairy and Food Inspection Division of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.  That division is responsible for the regulation of meat sales in Minnesota, and the inspectors on staff there work directly with farmers and processors.
