CTHM and log cultivation: CTHM is a mushroom farm that produces shiitake and other culinary and medicinal mushrooms for the Twin Cities area in Minnesota, as well as mushroom log kits and mushroom foods. We also teach workshops on mushroom cultivation. At CTHM we operate organically and with a focus on long-term sustainability and resilience. See www.cherrytreehousemushrooms.com for more about our farm.
You will be moving, cleaning, and inoculating mushroom logs, as well as other work such as setting up a new shade structure and hoophouse. If you are unfamiliar with log cultivation, you may want to look at my blog posts or Facebook posts on inoculations for details, but this internship is a great opportunity to get first hand exposure to a working mushroom farm, and I’m not stingy about sharing information or my experiences with mushroom farming or running a farm business.
We select interns based on physical dexterity, willingness to work hard, friendliness, good communication, and flexibility. Yes, previous experience doing log inoculations or other farming is ideal, but certainly not necessary.
The start date and duration of the internships will depend on the weather and other factors, but I expect the work to extend from mid February to the end of April. The work is full time, that is 8 hours daily M-F, 8:30am – 5:30pm with a break for lunch.
You will make between $5.25 and $8.50 per hour depending on skill and experience, as well as payments to medicare and social security. No paid vacation or sick time is provided, but time off will be available on a case-by-case basis.
I don’t live on the farm, which is 35-45 minutes outside the Twin Cities. Interns are encouraged to carpool with each other or with me to the farm. At this point there is no housing available for interns.
My wife and I live in south central Minneapolis, where we keep chickens and bees. She has a job in town and her own business making and selling sewing crafts.
If you are interested in one of these positions, please send me an email or letter introducing yourself, as well as a resume and personal and professional references. I hope to select candidates by the first week of February.
I will want to meet you in person for a working interview – that is we’ll inoculate some logs, or do some other work, and we’ll speak more about the internship. If you appear to be a good fit for CTHM I will contact your references. You can reach me at: email@example.com I hope to hear from you!
